Contests with real catches only
Nothing changes for you: take the photo, log the catch, done.
- Camera-only – optional, enabled by the organiserThen only a photo taken through the app's camera counts. Photos from your library are not accepted in that case, to rule out manipulation.
- A verification code in the pictureAs you shoot, the app burns a code into the photo: new every day and tied to you. If it is missing because the picture was cropped, the organiser sees that straight away.
- A review queue for the organiserCapture time, code and submission time are listed for every catch. Anything odd is sorted to the top automatically.
Your spot stays yours. Always.
Your fishing spots are yours! By default only the friends you've added see your catches – and not with an exact position, only which water you fished. To share exact spots with your closest friends there's the Spot Crew feature – but of course you don't have to use it.

- Photos without metadataOn upload, GPS and every other EXIF field is stripped from the image server-side.

- The one exception: contestsContest organisers see your exact GPS location only if the contest has explicitly enabled that option and you agreed to it when joining. By default they see the water only. The join screen shows you the rule beforehand.
Eel and grayling are specially protected species in Europe, so for them we always show the water only, whatever you choose.

Frequently asked questions
What does ReelRank cost?
At launch, every feature is free. A genuinely usable core stays free permanently, but not every feature will. Servers, database, maps and photo storage cost money every month, so some features will move to a paid tier later. We'll announce which ones in good time, before anything changes for you.
Can other people see where I fish?
No. In the default setting a catch is visible to your friends only, and the location they see is the water, not the exact spot. You can adjust both settings per catch whenever you want.
Who can see my catches?
You decide, per catch. Three levels: Personal (only you), Friends (mutually confirmed friends and your Spot Crew) or Public (map, leaderboards, public profile). You set a default in the settings and can override it every time you save a catch. Visibility covers the whole catch, photo included.
What happens to my photos?
Photos follow the visibility of the catch they belong to. We don't sell them and don't use them for advertising. On upload every photo is re-encoded on our server, which strips all EXIF metadata: GPS position, camera model, time taken. A catch's location comes only from your privacy setting, never from the photo.
Do you sell my data? Are there ads?
No to both. Our business model is future features for contest organisers, not your data. To improve the app we measure usage only in aggregate and sparingly, EU-based, and we never sell such data.
Can contest organisers see my exact GPS location?
Only if the contest has explicitly enabled that option and you agreed to it when joining. By default they see the water only. The join screen shows you the rule beforehand.
Do I have to enter contests?
No. The catch log works completely without them: log catches, track personal bests, look at your statistics. There's also no public feed your catches automatically appear in.
Does it work without a signal?
In the iPhone app, yes. The catch is stored on your phone and uploaded automatically once you're back online. In the browser it doesn't; you need a connection there.
Is there an Android app?
Not yet. On Android you use ReelRank in the browser at www.reelrank.de: log catches, take part in contests, view leaderboards and statistics. Only when an organiser switches on camera-only do you need the iPhone app for that contest, because a browser cannot enforce it. Logging without signal and push notifications are iPhone-app only too. An Android app of our own is planned, and we'll give a date when we have one.
Do I need the app, or is the browser enough?
The browser is enough to start with. Logging, viewing and managing catches all work there. The iPhone app additionally logs offline, sends push notifications and handles camera verification for contests.
Are fishing contests allowed everywhere?
No, and this matters: whether and in what form fishing contests or challenges are allowed differs by country, region and water. In Germany, competitive fishing is prohibited or restricted in many cases. Before organising or entering one, find out what applies where you fish, and stick to it. The same goes for closed seasons, minimum sizes and permits. ReelRank is a tool for logging and scoring, not an organiser of fishing competitions. Responsibility for following the rules rests with you and with the organisers of contests and challenges.
How do you prevent fake catches?
Contest catches need a photo. As you take it, the app burns a tamper-proof code that changes daily into the bottom-left corner. Nothing changes for you: take the photo, log the catch, done. Yesterday's photo can't carry today's code, and a friend's photo carries their code, not yours.
How exactly does the watermark code work?
Every angler gets their own six-character code per day, computed from account and date with a secret key on our server. It's burned into the photo on your device before upload and is valid in every contest the catch counts in. Without the key nobody can produce a valid code.
What happens when a catch is flagged?
The catch counts as normal at first. Flags are hints for the organisers, not an automatic rejection. They decide, and if they reject the catch its points leave the standings. We never block automatically: camera clocks are wrong all the time, a hint costs nobody anything, a block costs a real fish.
How do I sign in?
With your Google account, and in the iPhone app with Sign in with Apple as well. There's no password to remember.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, at any time in the settings. Your personal catches and photos are deleted. Results from contests other people took part in stay on record anonymised, so nobody else's placing changes after the fact.
How do I report a bug or a problem?
